With the 2017 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships around the corner, Wunderman Thompson Mobile partnered with U.S. Figure Skating to enhance the event experience. By using their expertise building a multitude of other sport apps, Wunderman Thompson Mobile designed, developed, and deployed an iOS app to complement the championship event and provide users with informative skating content from icenetwork.

“Wunderman Thompson Mobile has a long history of delivering top sports apps. Bringing forth this expertise and our understanding of the sports vertical to icenetwork makes this a great first step in meeting the needs of skating fans” - Ben Reubenstein, President of Wunderman Thompson Mobile.

A New "Spin" on the U.S. Figure Skating Championships

In previous years, U.S. Figure Skating distributed inexpensive radio hardware to event goers so they could listen to the technical call of the live skating action. In 2017, Wunderman Thompson Mobile has made this stream available on the icenetwork app by implementing a Skate Radio feature. Now, fans anywhere can tune in to Skate Radio to hear figure skating experts provide insight into the scoring of the sport and how each element in a skater’s performance is being scored in real-time– all from the comfort of their mobile device.

In addition to the Skate Radio feature, the app provides users with news articles, a schedule of upcoming TV events, competition results and a Twitter feed following a curated list of skating accounts with the help of Fabric. To ensure fans never miss a moment of televised skating, the icenetwork app offers push notifications for the start of each event. Fans can also set alerts for upcoming Skate Radio broadcasts that, until the release of the icenetwork app, were reserved for those attending the championships. The icenetwork app makes the effort to educate skating fans and keep them engaged in a creative and user-friendly way even after the championship event.

While designing, Wunderman Thompson Mobile used their extensive knowledge regarding Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines to create an app that felt right at home on iOS devices.

Small Timeline, Big Results

The icenetwork app was delivered in five short weeks, which can be accredited to both U.S. Figure Skating’s flexibility and Wunderman Thompson Mobile’s team of developers, designers, project managers, and QA specialists. Wunderman Thompson Mobile and U.S. Figure Skating, with the support of Prudential, are dedicated to evolving the icenetwork app with additional features to further enhance the fan experience. New releases and updates to the app are expected throughout the coming months, so stay tuned for future improvements.
