Announcements from the Apple Special Event
Today at the Apple Special Event, the tech giant announced the iPhone 11 which will come in a variety of colors and has a new dual-camera system. The system allows for better shots in tight places in addition to more details in outside shots. The device is also better in low-light situations with Night Mode. The front-facing camera has a wider sensor as well as support for slow-motion video. Slow-motion selfies (Slofies?) will be a popular concept on social media during the launch, but how long they will be relevant? Only time will tell. A13 Bionic will power the device, which is a new chip from Apple. iPhone 11 will start at $699.
Next, the iPhone 11 Pro was announced. It has not two but three cameras – 12MP Wide, 12MP Ultra-Wide, and a Telephoto camera, and the Photos app will now include new editing software. All of these new features make the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 quite flexible and will enable creators to produce a lot of high-quality content. The phone will also have a Max version which will be a larger form factor with a higher resolution. The Pro will also use the A13 Bionic and the machine learning capabilities of the device were emphasized. Apple continues to double down on the client-side approach where competitors focus on doing machine learning in the cloud. Overall, the new A13 chip is more power-efficient, has four to five more hours of battery life depending on configuration, and devices will start at $999 for the base version. These new phones will ship September 20th with a preorder this Friday.
With iOS 13, the App Store will have a new main tab called Arcade. It will feature 100+ games that are exclusive to Apple Arcade and major studios such as Konami and Capcom have titles launching. Parents struggling with in-app purchase games filled with ads will be looking at this as a good solution for their kids’ gaming. It will cost $4.99/mo with a one-month free trial.
Apple TV+ will premiere on November 1st and will cost $4.99/mo. Buying an Apple device will come with one full year of free access to Apple TV+. Original content is a very competitive arena; Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and Disney have much stronger offerings. Regardless, all of these players will have strong apps and presence on Apple platforms.
Today at the Apple Special Event stories were shared about how the Apple Watch has helped people lose weight, deal with disabilities, and realize health challenges ahead of time. The tech giant announced three new studies continuing the use of Apple Watch as a study enabler. The Auditory Study, Women’s Health Study, and the Apple Heart & Movement Study will all start later this year. Apple Watch is an “always with you” device that health organizations should be continuing to look for research and understanding their patients.
A new Watch was also announced on stage, the Series 5, and it has an “always-on” display that has been a long-time complaint of previous devices. Additionally, a compass has been added to the hardware with a new app and complication which will also be available to developers. Hermès and Nike will have their own special editions of the watch. The Series 5 Watch will start at $399 and orders start today. Series 3 dropped to $199 which will cause the device to eat more market share from competitors.
A new iPad was announced to succeed in the entry-level 9.7” iPad. This 7th generation iPad has 10.2” Retina Display, Touch ID, and a new faster processor. It will cost $329 and continue to be an entry point into the Apple ecosystem. It is available today to order and delivers at the end of the month.
