WWDC 2019: What you need to know

Yesterday, June 3rd, 2019, Apple kicked off WWDC 2019, its annual developer conference. This briefing reviews the major announcements and offers POSSIBLE Mobile’s view on the opportunities for our clients and other brands. To download our full flash briefing, please click here.

iOS 13

Apple introduced iOS 13 at WWDC 2019, which will be available to the public this fall and will bring performance improvements to increase speed. For instance, with iOS 13, apps will launch up to twice as fast compared to on iOS 12. iOS 13 will also have more privacy protections around location and a feature called “Sign in with Apple,” which will enable user sign-ins directly with Apple as opposed to via social networks. Apple also introduced random email addresses so, if the user chooses to sign into an app via Apple, individual apps cannot reach out directly to users. Apple also announced Dark Mode, which will display content on the phone and within 
3rd party apps in a darker color scheme for enhanced viewing. However, for 3rd party apps, Dark Mode will not be an automatic switch.


With the newly introduced watchOS 6, apps will run independently on Apple Watch and will no longer be tied to an iPhone app. Apple also introduced an app store dedicated to the watch, which will allow users to purchase and install apps directly on the watch. To become an even more “Intelligent guardian for your health,” the enhanced activity app will include activity trends looking at the last 90 days vs. the last 365. Hearing health was also addressed with a noise app that will notify the user if sound could affect his or her hearing (when attending outings like sporting events). Apple said that this app won’t record or save any audio for privacy reasons.


tvOS will be upgraded with full-screen previews and multi-user support to make it more personal. Multi-user support will enable all users within a home to access their own personalized recommendations and a “watch-next” list.


For the first time, iPad was given a dedicated OS at WWDC 2019. Users will be able to pin widgets on the home screen, slide and switch apps with a tap, use multi-window capabilities and tasking, and desktop-class browsing will be brought to Safari. Lastly, support will be added for chosen fonts and through the new Sidecar app, iPads will be able to act as a second-screen display to the Mac.


New generation Catalina is the first without iTunes. Instead, there are individual apps for Apple Music, Apple Podcast and Apple TV. Additionally, Project Catalyst was introduced (formerly Marzipan), which will allow developers to port iPad apps to the Mac. Lastly, Apple included Voice Control and 
other functionality to improve accessibility on the Mac.

HomeKit and HomePod

Apple introduced firewalls via select routers to ensure that multiple devices aren’t compromised within HomeKit. Regarding HomePod, handoffs will be able to occur between the iPhone and HomePod device when music is playing. Also, personalization will be boosted, and over 100,000 radio stations will be added and available via Siri.


Shortcuts were improved and Siri’s sound will be more natural according to WWDC 2019.


The dashboard was expanded, showing more information and services.


Reality Composer was introduced to make development more efficient in ARKit 3. This will also give developers a new and unique way to create augmented-reality applications.


A new framework called SwiftUI was designed to build user interfaces with less code. This will make it possible for developers to write less error-prone code and also make it easier to 
fix bugs.

In Conclusion

The most significant announcements for developers and marketers from WWDC 2019 were the improvements to Swift, the first-ever Apple Watch-only applications and dedicated app store, and the first OS for iPad that further differentiates this platform’s experience than one delivered through an iPhone. Lastly, it is important to reiterate that Apple sought to improve productivity with Project Catalyst, with the idea that apps can be built with one code base for iPad and Mac.
